  1. Wear warm clothes
    • It can get very cold in the middle of the night, even in summer, especially if you are sitting in one place for any length time. Remember it's easy to take layers off if you get warm, but you can't put layers on if you don't have them and you're getting cold!

  2. Wear sensible, comfortable flat-soled shoes
    • It's always a good idea to wear sensible, comfortable, flat shoes. Firstly you will often be walking around quite a lot to start with so you don't want to get uncomfortable. Secondly, the floors of many of the locations are old and uneven and so it's far easier to be unbalanced on higher heeled shoes. Thirdly, some of the older floors in locations can be quite fragile and are more easily damaged by higher heeled shoes which concentrate the pressure on a much smaller area.

  3. Bring a torch
    • Although we supply a limited number of torches for the night, it's always a good idea to bring your own, especially a small one. This is because:
      1. It's far less distracting for other members of your team if you use a small torch to check your equipment or to see to write as it will affect everyone's night vision less than the beam of a larger torch.
      2. There are some places that are notorious for battery power being inexplicably drained so it's always useful to have a few spare torches within a group!

  4. Bring spare batteries
    • Bring spare batteries for every piece of electronic equipment you bring whether it's torches, cameras, EMF meters, anything! There are theories that spirits can drain battery power to add to their own energy so they are able to make noises etc... Whether you believe it's spirits draining the battery or not, there are some places notorious for battery drain, so it never hurts to keep a spare on hand!
